How to Promote Your Small Business Website for Free: 12 Ways That Work
A new website doesn't bring visitors on its own. These 12 free ways do, starting with three you can finish this week.
How do you promote a small business website for free? Start where customers already look:
- Put the link on your Google Business Profile.
- List your business in the major directories.
- Add the link to every customer touchpoint.
- Ask for reviews that send people to it.
- Publish answers to the questions your customers ask.
These cost nothing but an afternoon and keep working for months.
Your website is live.
You told your family. You posted it once.
And then... nothing.
No calls from it.
No messages.
The visitor counter barely moves.
Here's what nobody tells you.
A new website starts with no traffic at all. Google doesn't know it exists yet, nobody has linked to it, and your customers don't know to look for it.
That's normal. And it's fixable without spending a cent.
Here are 12 free ways to promote it, in the order that pays off fastest.
Start here: the 3 that work this week
1. Put your website on your Google Business Profile
This is the single most important free step for a local business.
When someone searches your name or "your service near me," your Google Business Profile is often the first thing they see. Add your website link, then make sure your hours, services, photos and phone number match what your site says.
Then keep it alive. Post an update or a photo every week or two.
2. Put the link everywhere you already show up
Most of your future visitors already know you. They just don't have the link.
Add it to:
- Your email signature
- Your Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and LinkedIn bios
- Invoices, quotes and receipts
- Business cards, flyers and menus
- Your van, your shop window, your front counter (as a QR code)
- Your voicemail message ("Book any time at...")
None of this costs anything, and it turns every customer interaction into a visit.
3. Ask happy customers for a review
Reviews are free promotion that keeps working.
They help you show up in Google's local results, they're the first thing new customers read, and AI assistants use them when they decide which local businesses to mention.
Ask right after a job goes well. Send a direct link so it takes ten seconds. There's a full guide on how to get more Google reviews.

4. List your business in the main directories
Directories help customers find you, and they help Google and AI assistants confirm your business is real.
Start with the free listings that matter most:
- Google Business Profile (done above)
- Bing Places
- Apple Business Connect (for Apple Maps)
- Yelp
- One or two directories specific to your trade or city
Use exactly the same business name, address and phone number everywhere. Mismatches confuse search engines.
5. Make sure Google can find your site
A website Google hasn't found can't show up in search.
- Add your site to Google Search Console (free) and submit your sitemap.
- Do the same in Bing Webmaster Tools (free). Bing powers more than its own search; ChatGPT's web search draws heavily on it.
- Make sure every page has a clear title saying what you do and where.
6. Answer the questions your customers ask
Write down the ten questions customers ask you most. Prices. How long it takes. What to expect. Whether you cover their area.
Then answer each one clearly on your website.
This is the most underrated free promotion there is. People search those exact questions, and AI assistants look for clear answers to quote. Each answer is a new way in.
7. Write one genuinely useful post a month
You don't need a blog that runs daily. One useful post a month, built around a real customer question, is enough to start.
"How much does a bathroom remodel cost in Tampa?" will bring more of the right visitors than "Welcome to our new blog."
Spread the word: the last 5
8. Share it in local groups, carefully
Local Facebook groups, Nextdoor and community forums are full of people asking for recommendations.
The rule: help first, link second. Answer the question properly. Mention your business only when it genuinely fits, and follow each group's rules about promotion.
9. Partner with businesses next door
Find businesses that serve the same customers without competing with you. A wedding photographer and a florist. A gym and a physio. A realtor and a cleaner.
Recommend each other, link to each other's websites, and share each other's posts. A link from a respected local business is worth more than a dozen from random sites.
10. Email your existing customers
Your past customers are the people most likely to come back and refer others.
Send a short note: what's new, one useful tip, and a link to your site. Even a list of 50 people is worth emailing.
11. Turn your social posts into website visits
Social media works best as a doorway, not a destination.
When you post, give people a reason to click: a full price list, a booking calendar, a before-and-after gallery that lives on your site. See what local businesses should post on Instagram for ideas that bring people in.
12. Get mentioned by local press and blogs
Local news sites, community blogs and newsletters need stories.
Pitch something real: a milestone, a local cause you support, an unusual service, a useful tip for the season. One mention from a local news site can send visitors and boost your search ranking for months.
What doesn't work (and wastes your time)
- Buying links or "SEO packages" for $50. They can get your site penalized.
- Spamming groups with your link. You'll get removed and remembered for the wrong reason.
- Submitting to hundreds of directories. A handful of real ones beats hundreds of junk ones.
- Waiting. A website doesn't promote itself. The businesses that grow are the ones that keep doing the small things.

How long until you see results?
Be patient with search and fast with everything else.
- Days: link sharing, email, social and local groups can bring visitors immediately.
- Weeks: your Google Business Profile, reviews and directory listings start to show results.
- Months: search rankings and AI search mentions build slowly, then keep paying off.
Promotion isn't a launch day. It's a habit you keep for months.
Your free promotion plan, week by week
| Week | Do this | Time |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Link the site on your Google Business Profile, email signature, social bios and invoices | 1 hour |

| 3 | List the business in the main directories, with the same name, address and phone everywhere | 2 hours |
| 4 | Publish one page that answers the question customers ask most | 2 hours |
| Every month | One useful post, one email to customers, one local partner mention | 2–3 hours |
Promoting your website on Google specifically comes down to weeks 1, 3 and 4: your profile, consistent listings and pages that answer real questions. The Google Business Profile checklist covers the profile in detail, and there's more on being found without paying in local SEO basics.
